Bruce T. Johnson
B. T. Johnson began making sculptures when he was 6 years old and continued through High School and his Military service. In 1975 he was “Artist in Residence” at the St. Paul Art Learning Center in St. Paul, MN. In 1976 and 1977 he did undergraduate studies at Macalester College in St. Paul, MN, and in 1979 he received his Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the Minneapolis College of Art and Design in Minneapolis, MN.
Between 1974 and 1980 Johnson had one-person shows at the Stin-Low Gallery, Oxman’s Gallery, and the Red Mountain Art Exhibition, all in Minneapolis, MN. He also exhibited his sculpture at the Deer Track Art Festival in South Bend, IN.
In 1981 he moved his family to Philadelphia, PA. While there he had exhibitions of his work at the South Street Art Gallery in Philadelphia, PA and the Summit New Jersey juried Art Exhibition, judged by Vivian Raynor, Art Critic for the New York Times. In 1983 Johnson moved to New York and while residing in the Mid-Hudson Valley area of New York he had art exhibitions at the OK Harris Gallery in New York City, New York, and numerous other art galleries, competitions, and juried art shows.
In 1991 Johnson moved his family back to Minnesota and set-up home and studio in Isanti. Since returning to Minnesota he has had a one-person show at Utrillo’s Modern Art Gallery in Indianapolis, IN, a two-person show at the Kraine Fine arts Gallery on Grand Avenue in St. Paul, MN, and a “Sidewalk Insurgent” show at the Walker Art Center Sculpture Garden, Minneapolis, MN.
Since 2001 Johnson has entered his sculpture in the East Central Regional Art “Image” juried exhibitions yearly and has been awarded a Best in Show … 1st place, 5 times, one 2nd place & purchase award, two 3rd place awards, and two merit awards. He also received the 1st place award at the 2008 Music & Art Festival Juried Art Show in Rush City, MN, the 1st place award and People’s Choice award at the 2012 Braham Pie Day Juried Art Show and an Honorable Mention award at the Banfill-Locke Gallery juried art show in Fridley, MN for his sculpture.
In 2013 Johnson was commissioned to create a large wood sculpture for Spring Lake Park called “Queequeg’s Gift,” which is 13ft x 4ft x 4ft.
Johnson is a member of the Cambridge Center for the Arts and Wyoming Creative Arts Center.
