Charles Halling (1937 - 2006)

Charles Halling was born Feb. 10, 1937, to Lawrence and Edna (Moen) Halling of Milan, Minnesota.  He attended Milan Public Schools, graduating in 1955.  He then completed a bachelor of arts degree from Concordia College, Moorhead, Minnesota, in 1959, with a major emphasis of study in painting and drawing.  He went on to earn a bachelor of fine arts degree in ceramics from the Kansas City Art Institute, studying under renowned ceramics professors Ken Ferguson and Victor Babu.  Charles served in the U.S. Army at Ft. Leavenworth, Kanas, as a draftsman at the U.S. Command and General Staff College. He was united in marriage to Nancy Martin of Lansing, Kanas, on July 30, 1961. They had two sons Phil and Dan.

They lived in Kansas City for a number of years where Chuck worked as a typesetter. In 1971 the Halling family moved to Northfield, Minnesota, where he and Nancy established Halling Pottery. He created porcelain and stoneware pottery at their studio near Northfield. Throughout the years, his work has won numerous awards. He sold his pottery at his home studio showroom and several fine art and craft galleries in Minnesota. Charles was an avid reader, photographer, and musician. He also enjoyed road trips to the Southwest.
