Floyd E. Brewer (1899 – 1984)

A mural tapestry designer, painter, teacher, and lecturer, Floyd Brewer was born in Coin, Iowa.  A pioneer in abstract painting, he received his early training in the Twin Cities.  Later studying in Paris, Munich and Mexico.  He studied at the Minneapolis School of Art; St. Paul School of Art and with Cameron Booth, Hans Hofmann, Fernand Leger, Wassily Kandinsky and Diego Rivera.

He was active in Minneapolis and St. Paul from the 1930s through the 1950s.  In 1960 Brewer moved to Gig Harbor, Washington, where he and his wife, Margareth, operated Floymar Studio and gave radio and television lectures on art.

Brewer’s work is in collections at the Minnesota Historical Society; Walker Art Center, Minneapolis; St. Paul Gallery of Art; American Swedish Institute, Minneapolis; Minneapolis Institute of Arts; University of Minnesota, Duluth; and the Treasury Department, Washington, D.C.
