Gerald E. Martin
Gerald E Martin was born in Des Moines Iowa in 1941. He graduated from Minneapolis College of Art and design in 1964 with a BFA degree, majoring in printmaking. He was influenced by faculty such as Hugh Kappel, Birney Quick, Paul Olson, Dave Nye Brown. He received a M.A. degree in education from the University of St. Thomas, St. Paul, MN, in 1977.
Beginning in 1964, he exhibited extensively in galleries, art centers, and colleges. His work is in many public and private collections including the Minneapolis Institute of Arts and the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis, MN. He continues to exhibit in juried art shows, and his work may be seen at Gallery 5004 in the Twin Cities area.
Martin has taught various times at the Minneapolis College of Art and Design, Macalester University in St. Paul, MN, Anderson University in Anderson, IN, St. Catherine University in St. Paul, MN and at St. Thomas Academy in Mendota Heights, MN. He has also conducted extensive seminars in stone lithography at many colleges and art centers as an extension of the Martin Graphic Workshop in Minneapolis, MN.
In 1967, he designed and produced the Martin Stone Lithography Press. He then began to produce hand-printed editions for many area artists, in addition to his own work. This became the Martin Graphic Workshop. Out of the workshop grew The Martin Gallery that exhibited work by many artists in addition to the workshop product from 1968 - 1974.
As an artist, Martin explains that his imagery usually begins from “life drawing,” but the end product is greatly informed by things such as poetry, music, movies, and the Bible. Georges Rouault, Max Beckman, Vachel Lindsey, Robert Frost, Frederico Fellini, Ingmar Bergman, Carl Barks, Country Blues and English ballads are favorite thematic influences.
