Herman Rowan (1923 - 2013)
Herman (Hank) Rowan was an American artist and educator. He was born on July 20, 1923, in New York City. He served in the United States Army Air Corps from 1941-1945 and was part of the European Theatre of Operations.
After that, he studied at Cooper Union and San Francisco State College before receiving a Bachelor of Science degree from Kansas State University in 1950 and a Master of Fine Arts degree from State University Iowa in 1952. Rowan was primarily inspired creatively by the 1950s Abstract Expressionism movement in New York City.
From 1963 to 1993 he was a Professor of Studio Arts at the University of Minnesota and continued living in Minneapolis until his death in 2013. He was primarily an oil painter and was listed as a notable artist and educator by Marquis Who’s Who.
