James Wilcox Dimmers
James Wilcox Dimmers is considered one of the foremost painters of the St. Croix River Valley. He grew up in White Bear Lake, and as soon as he got his driver's license, he and his best friend would head for the St. Croix to swim at the boom site just north of Stillwater. He also started painting the area at that time. After graduating from the University of Minnesota, he settled into an old valley farmhouse (without electricity) and set to work honing his impressionist techniques.
Philanthropist Aimée Butler provided Dimmers with a monthly stipend in exchange for his paintings. "Thanks to her I have over 60 paintings hanging in Hazelden," the addiction treatment facility near Center City, Minnesota, Dimmers said.
He had a studio for 27 years above the landmark Marine General Store before settling in Osceola, Wisconsin.
Dimmers often uses a camera to record images to paint later. “It goes everywhere I go,” he said. “I can get the light if I wait long enough. I’ll be out there four hours … waiting until the light is exactly what I know God’s going to make it.”
Dimmers paintings are included in major corporate and private collections across the U.S., Europe and Canada.
