Jean Swedell Souders (1923-2011)
Jean was born in Minnesota and studied at the Minneapolis Institute of Art and the Walker School of Art. She earned a B.A. at the University of Minnesota – Duluth and a Master of Fine Arts in painting and art history at the University of Iowa. She also worked closely with Martin Bloch in London, England and John Groth at the Art Students League in New York. Jean taught at St. Olaf College, the University of Minnesota and California State University, Chico. She stopped teaching in 1974 to pursue full-time work in her three studios, located in northern California, northern Minnesota on Lake Superior, and in the mountains of Montana.
Her work glorifies the grandeur of America’s majestic mountains and peaceful landscapes. Jean’s unique structural compositions and bold colors depict nature with an intelligent eye … comfortable but challenging, familiar yet mysterious!
Jean’s work has been exhibited at the Des Moines Art Center, San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, Crocker Art Museum, Sacramento, the National Drawing and Sculpture Show in Corpus Christi, Texas and at more than forty colleges and universities. Her work is included in the collections of the University of Iowa, Carnegie Library, Shasta College, Minneapolis Lee School, Christ Lutheran Church, Sacramento, St. Olaf College and hundreds of private collections.
