Gopal C. Mitra (1929-1992)
 

Gopal Mitra came to the United States in 1958 from his native India and became a fine arts instructor and graduate assistant at the University of Minnesota from 1958 to 1967. 

​

Over those years he earned a master’s degree in fine arts and a doctorate in philosophy.  He also taught in the Worthington public school system in Minnesota and helped establish a student exchange program between the United States and India.

​

The mayor of Worthington presented one of Mitra’s paintings to President John Kennedy for the White House art collection in 1962. 

​

Mitra taught art at Chicago State University for a year before joining the faculty at Edinboro University in 1969.  He was a fine art professor at Edinboro for the next 23 years, until his death in 1992.
