James Burpee (1938-2026)
James Burpee lived and worked in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Beyond the numerous collections in the Twin Cities, his works are in collections from Hawaii to New York.
He was in national invitational exhibitions, and featured in a range of solo and group shows. Burpee was an Artist in Residence in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park and Foundation Karolyi in Vence, France, among other locations, and he was a visiting artist across the country, including the California College of Arts & Crafts and Washington University in St. Louis, MO.
He was an instructor at the college level since 1960, teaching at the Minneapolis College of Art & Design through 1996 and after that he taught at the University of Minnesota in the Department of Art on the Twin Cities Campus. He compiled and published a catalog of his artwork from 1960 to 2004.
