Thomas Cowette (1938 - 2015)
Cowette was born in Minneapolis in 1938, earned his B.F.A. Degree in painting in 1962 from the Minneapolis School of Art and was a long time member of the art faculty at the University of Minnesota. He also was a teacher at the Minneapolis School of Art, Minneapolis Institute of Arts, St. Paul Arts and Science Center and the Minnetonka Center for the Arts and Education. Gallery 5004 is delighted to feature his graphite on paper drawings (8 1/2" x 11"), many of which depict aerial views of imagined landscapes and historical sites.
His work is also represented in collections of the Minneapolis Institute of Arts, Walker Art Center, Minneapolis, MN, College of St. Catherine, St. Paul, MN, Marshall State College, Marshall, MN, The Target Center, Minneapolis, MN, as well as many other private collections.
In Tom’s own words … “Though the “look” of my work has changed over the years, my primary concern has remained the same. I continue to pursue compelling formal qualities within the context of personal imagery; in other words, significant form. These same qualities … balance, resolution, wholeness, etc. – seem to be a vital need that is fundamental to human nature.”
